About Scar Revision Treatment
If you have noticeably large scars or tiny scars that will never go away on their own, you may be a great candidate for scar revision surgery at Inspire Cosmetic Surgery & Med Spa. We help patients of all ages improve the appearance of their scars from trauma or leftover surgical wounds where the surgeon did not take precaution for scars. We offer our patients a consultation for scar revision surgery in our office in Delray Beach, FL. While our talented and experienced plastic surgeons cannot make your scars go away completely, we can assess the issue and make a plan to minimize the appearance of your scars (anywhere on your body). A scar revision may be a series of cosmetic surgeries and treatments performed all at once or in stages. We also keep in mind that whatever surgery or treatment you choose, we will make sure it will not damage the skin surrounding the scar itself.
Types of Scars
Since there are various scar revision procedures that address different types of scars, it is beneficial to recognize the correct type a patient has in order to treat it effectively.
- Atrophic scars take on a sunken look and are usually caused by surgery, acne, trauma or chickenpox.
- Keloid scars occur due to cell overproduction following skin injury. They are raised, thick and have a red-purple color and extend beyond the original wound. They can be itchy or painful.
- Hypertrophic scars are raised and red in color but don’t expand beyond the wound area. They can restrict movement.
- Scar contractures are usually the result of burns and lead to the skin shrinking, tightening and cause movement restriction.
"What an amazing team!! Dr. Goodwin, Kathy and Angela made a very stressful life event involving my double mastectomy and reconstruction turn from a nightmare into a dream. Very supportive with great bedside manner. This truly talented surgeon has your best interests in mind always."- H.V. / Yelp / Feb 05, 2019
"I Recommend Dr Schnitt - Dr. Schnitt and his staff were polite and knowledgeable. I had a filler in my lips and I was very happy with the results. Unfortunately I feel that the enhancement vanished quickly, I want to say three months at best, but I don't think this was the doctor's fault. It's something to keep into consideration, that fillers do not last a long time for some people, and especially in areas that move a lot like the mouth. Regardless, results were beautiful and very natural looking. I will probably go back to have it done again."- P. / RealSelf / May 01, 2019
"Acute attention to detail!! He is a perfectionist in every way!! His level of compassionate perfection meets no other match!! He is a superior vascular surgeon with a gift for helping kids. His work with operation smile has given him a skill and reward for keeping kids from having terrible scars. He treated my daughter, when her pediatrician suggested a dermatologist remove something from her scalp for a biopsy. The scar is unnoticeable in her hair & the results could have been drastically different. Dr. Drew has respectively passed when I've wanted and even insisted upon procedures. His policy is to improve and enhance! You'll never look weird if he is your doc!! Specialty: boobs, gender reassignment, vascular, nose, Botox, anything child related - from stitches to cleft pallet!!"- S.T. / Yelp / Apr 30, 2019
"I received lip injections from Katie about 2 weeks ago, and I am in love with the way they settled. I wanted more volume overall and definition to my upper lip, and Katie delivered!!! I would recommend her over anyone else, I am sure you will not be disappointed."- S.H. / Yelp / Apr 18, 2019
"I wanted to share my outstanding experience regarding my recent reconstructive surgery. In addition to being a highly credentialed, phenomenal doctor who has enabled me to feel proud of my body again, he is a wonderful person. Compassionate, caring, & always willing to listen, Dr. Goodwin's bedside manner is unparalleled. Despite my countless questions, I never once felt rushed during any of my appointments & he always answered me with kindness, patience, & sensitivity."- Anonymous / Healthgrades / Mar 24, 2019
What to Expect
Depending on the type of scar that a patient has, along with the size, location and its appearance, a surgeon can employ several different procedures. For surface scars, you may be prescribed topical ointments, tapes or external compression to improve discoloration. With shave excision, a surgical shaver is used to remove the top part of the scar to leave a more even surface. Sunken or depressed scars can be injected with various substances to improve texture and overall appearance. Dermabrasion, light therapy, and chemical peels can also be deployed to improve the appearance of scars. There are other various procedures that can be performed to help minimize the appearance of scars. For scars that require a more invasive approach, surgery may be required.
We can perform out-patient scar revision surgeries in our surgical facility at Inspire Cosmetic Surgery & Med Spa. Depending on the type of scar you have and the techniques for revision selected, you may have a local or a general anesthetic. In a treatment planning session, your board-certified plastic surgeon will create a customized surgical plan to meet your needs.
